I took the kids to a movie last night, and one of the previews was this music video recruiting for the National Guard. I thought it was fantastic – the production values are great in the video, but more than that, the words of the song embody the reasons I joined the military at seventeen. I wanted to be there – for my country, for my brothers-in-arms, and in a way, for myself.
I think all men find purpose in “being there” for others. In fact, I think this is what James referred to as “Pure and faultless” religion.
I’m making it my goal to look after more “widows and orphans” in the next year. I need to be more personally charitable, and to make sure my kids know what’s going on. Sure, we already give to a variety of causes and ministries, but If the goal is to make true followers of Christ out of my children, they need to see more of that. They need to learn, from me, the great joy in “being there” for others.
